Today was a day of building raised beds for the polytunnel adding new layers of rotted manure. I will be adding more rotted manure and cotton stuffing until the full bed height is reached. I estimate the deepest bed at about 18″ and the shallowest at about 10-12″.

It really did feel like autumn today, we had lows of about 9C during the day time and we’re looking at 6C tonight.

The Field Beans are coming through now, I’m using them as a green manure so I’ll be planting a lot more of them over the next month or so. Apparently the latest thinking is that they don’t really ‘fix’ Nitrogen in the ground particularly, but they produce plenty of compostable growth and some edible beans to foot.

I planted out my Thermidrom Garlic in our Square Foot Garden, with 9 to a square foot, in our test bed. I ordered some new varieties from Simply Seed, I decided to get a nice selection as we love our garlic:

Garlic-ExtraEarlyWight Qty: 1 “Garlic Extra Early Wight”

Garlic-SolentWight Qty: 1 “Garlic Solent Wight”

Garlic-IberianWight Qty: 1 “Garlic Iberian Wight”

Garlic-MersleyWight Qty: 1 “Garlic Mersley Wight”

Garlic-Elephant Qty: 1 “Elephant Garlic”

Garlic-LautrecWight Qty: 1 “Garlic Lautrec Wight”

Whichever ones we like the most we’ll keep some aside for seeding the following year, we also want to see what works best in our microclimate.
